Giacomo Puccini: Capriccio Sinfonico

Context

After completing his studies at the Milan Conservatory in 1883, Giacomo Puccini presented Capriccio Sinfonico at his graduation ceremony. This purely orchestral work is one of only three extensive works for orchestra as he then dedicated his craft to opera. Capriccio Sinfonico ended up being the last, with only a few shorter works being composed for orchestra alone.

The Music

Although not as well-remembered as his operas, it was indeed this work that originated a number of themes that are remembered in Puccini’s operas. With themes from La Bohème and Tosca appearing nearly note by note in sections of this work, it is clear that although it may not be Puccini’s shining light, the work was a handy vehicle for further compositions. Through the varying stages of the piece, Puccini defines the sound that we all know and love today, which showcases the Italian Bel Canto style of writing. There is a level of integrity throughout the work, as heard in other Puccini overtures for operas.

A flurry of themes are presented throughout this c.10 minute work – how many themes can you recognise from other Puccini operas?
